Listen carefully: if you don't love, you don't know God. Not can't eventually know him, not haven't fully known him—you don't know him. Because God's fundamental nature is love.

This is almost shockingly absolute. John isn't saying love is one attribute among many; he's saying love is who God is. So when someone claims to know God but doesn't love, they've got it fundamentally backwards. John is making it impossible to separate faith from love.

John makes an ontological claim of extraordinary radicality: 'God is love' (ho theos agapē estin). This isn't metaphorical but definitional—God's Being consists fundamentally in self-giving relationship. To deny love is to deny God Himself. The contrapositive is withering: a loveless person's claim to know God is self-refuting. Origen, Aquinas, and later Barth wrestled with this: if God is love essentially, then creation itself flows from love, and redemption recapitulates that pattern.

Significance

This crystallizes the progression from 1 John 1:5 ('God is light') through the developing revelation of God's character.
