Yet this ancient commandment simultaneously appears as new—newly realized and newly empowered—because Christ has brought it into full light and made it operative in believers' lives.

Language and setting

The apparent contradiction between verses 7 and 8 reflects a sophisticated theological move: the commandment is paradoxically both old and new (kainos, not neos—not temporally new but qualitatively renewed). This echoes Jesus's word in Matthew 13:52 about treasures old and new. The shift from physical to theological vision—'darkness is fading and the true light is already shining' (Greek: to skotos paragetai, kai to phos to alethinon ede phainei)—indicates John's realized eschatology: the eschaton has begun in Christ's coming and believers already participate in that light.

Significance
