The term 'anointing' (chrisma) echoes the Old Testament's ritual anointing of prophets and priests and the Messianic imagery of 'the anointed one' (christos). Here it denotes the Spirit's empowerment of the entire community—not esoteric knowledge for elites but shared charismatic perception. The phrase 'you know the truth' (oiuate to alethinon) employs the Greek term aletheia (truth), which in the Johannine corpus signifies not mere factual accuracy but salvific reality—the self-revealing presence of God in Christ. John's point is that the Spirit-anointed community possesses an intuitive grasp of truth that inoculates them against false teaching.

Significance
