Right now, in this present life, our understanding and our ability to speak God's truth are both limited and incomplete—we only have part of the picture.
Paul is starting to explain why spiritual gifts are temporary. They're designed for now, when we're still fumbling our way toward understanding. We're not seeing the whole thing yet.

This reflects the reality that Christians live in the 'in-between'—the kingdom has come in Jesus but it's not yet fully realized. We're working with incomplete information and partial revelation.
Our present possession of spiritual knowledge and prophetic insight is inherently partial and incomplete, limited by our current epistemic condition.
Paul begins the justification for why gifts will cease: they are themselves fragmentary (meros—partial, piece-by-piece). The Corinthians operated under a false anthropology, believing they could access complete heavenly wisdom in this age. Paul grounds the argument in a realistic epistemology—we 'know in part' (ek merous ginóskomen) and 'prophesy in part' (ek merous propheteúomen). This addresses the gnostic tendencies within Corinth that claimed comprehensive revelation.

This reflects a crucial Pauline conviction about the limitations of human knowledge prior to the eschaton—echoed in Romans 8:26 (the Spirit intercedes with groans too deep for words) and 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 (revelation that cannot be put into words).

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.
