If the patriarchs had been mentally oriented toward the earthly lands they left behind, they would have possessed the opportunity to return; but they did not return, demonstrating their genuine orientation elsewhere.

The Greek anakamptō (ἀνακάμπτω), 'return,' appears in the conditional: had they mentally clung to Mesopotamia or Egypt, the historical record could have shown homeward journeys. Yet it did not. This becomes a behavioral validation of their inner faith-posture: actions (or deliberate non-actions) expose one's true devotion. Josephus records various return movements of diaspora Jews; the author's point is that the patriarchs' generation did not participate in such nostalgia—their entire existence testified to an alternative allegiance.
