Twelve Blessings

Dan will bring justice to his people, playing a judicial role among the tribes of Israel as one of the twelve.
Jacob is saying Dan's tribe will have a specific function—they'll be administrators of justice, settling disputes and maintaining order. This is honor of a different sort than military conquest or commerce.

Dan will provide justice ('din,' judgment) for his people, functioning as a legal and judicial authority within the tribal confederation.
The name 'Dan' is etymologically connected to 'din' (judgment, justice), a wordplay that Israelite tradition would have recognized immediately. The phrase 'yadin' (he will judge) establishes Dan's role as judicial arbiter—not primarily military or territorial, but adjudicative. The phrase 'like one of the tribes of Israel' is oddly defensive or normalizing; it suggests Dan's authority is equal to but not exceeding other tribal authorities. This modest framing introduces the next verse's darker characterization.

Dan's role as judge reflects the premonarchic tribal structure where justice was administered through elders and tribal authorities. Later, the tribe of Dan will produce judges (Samson), but also will engage in aggressive tribal expansion and idolatry—making this blessing ambiguous in hindsight.
