Language and setting

The brothers are unprepared for this reversal; they have done nothing wrong according to their conscious intention, and they have already demonstrated their honesty by returning the inadvertently included silver from their first journey (42:35). The shock of false accusation echoes the shock of Joseph's own false imprisonment in Potiphar's house (39:14-20).

Significance

The steward becomes Joseph's agent, a functionary through whom Joseph extends his will—much as Pharaoh extends his will through Joseph himself. The hierarchy and delegation of authority mirror the cosmic structure of the narrative: God's purposes work through human instruments.

4They had not gone far from the city when Joseph told his steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?

5Is this not the cup my master drinks from and uses for divination? What you have done is wicked!’”

7“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked. “Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.

8We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
