Put yourself in Jacob's shoes. He's old, afraid, already grieving. He lost Joseph years ago, and Benjamin is his only living connection to Rachel. Now his sons are saying he has to send Benjamin to Egypt or everyone starves. His anger is really terror. He's lashing out because he feels cornered.

The scholarly reading

Jacob responds with apparent anger, accusing his sons of foolishness for ever mentioning Benjamin's existence to the Egyptian official.

Language and setting

Jacob's emotional outburst — 'Why did you bring this trouble upon me?' (לָמָה הֲרֵעֹתֶם לִי, lamah ha-re'otem li) — reflects the anguish of a father already bereft (as he believes) of Joseph and now threatened with loss of Benjamin. Yet beneath his anger lies the fundamental question: Why did you reveal what I wished to conceal? In Rabbinic interpretation, particularly in the Midrash Rabbah, commentators note that Jacob's rebuke contains an implicit accusation that his sons were careless with information that was never theirs to disclose.

Significance

Jacob's resistance represents the final barrier to the providential design; his sons must defend their honesty and begin to move him toward the surrender that reconciliation requires.
