Back to Bethel
Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.” Genesis 35:1 · Berean Standard Bible
God tells Jacob to go to Bethel and build an altar there, reminding him of the moment God appeared to him when he was running for his life from Esau.
Jacob has been living in Paddan-aram for years, building his family and wealth. He's recently had trouble with Laban and conflict with the people of Shechem after his sons' violence there. God now calls him back to the place where everything changed for him—Bethel, where he encountered God as a fugitive and made his famous vow.
God speaking directly to Jacob
This is a pivotal moment in Jacob's spiritual journey. He's being called back to his roots, to remember the covenant God made with him at the beginning of his exile. It's part of the bigger story of God establishing a people and keeping His promises through Jacob's line.
God commands Jacob to leave his current location and journey to Bethel, where he will build an altar to commemorate God's earlier appearance during his flight from Esau.
Jacob has recently survived a violent confrontation at Shechem (chapter 34), where his sons killed the inhabitants in retaliation for Dinah's violation. The family is now vulnerable and spiritually compromised. God's directive represents a strategic withdrawal and spiritual reorientation—a call to return to the place of covenant foundation.

This marks a pivotal moment in Jacob's spiritual maturation. He is being called back to Bethel—the site of his first covenant encounter (28:12-22)—to formalize what was once a desperate, conditional vow into a genuine altar of worship.
