Shechem offers unlimited economic compensation—whatever bride-price and gift the family demands—if only they will release Dinah to him as wife.

Language and setting

The phrase וַיָּרֶם עָלַי מְאֹד (vayarem alai me'od, literally 'make it high upon me') employs economic language cognate with cuneiform bride-price terminology. Shechem is declaring himself willing to bankrupt himself for Dinah. This is a rhetorical move that makes his contrition economically visible—he will absorb whatever financial burden the family sets. Yet his persistence ('Only give me the girl as my wife') betrays his true priority: possession of Dinah, not restitution for harm.
