What It Means

Genesis 26:2, in plain English

God stops Isaac before he can leave for Egypt, telling him to stay put and trust that God will take care of him right there where he is.

Why it's here

Isaac is probably already packing. Egypt is the sensible backup plan, the place where you know you can survive a famine. But God interrupts with a direct command—and notice, it's not about Isaac earning God's favor. It's about Isaac learning to trust God's promise over his own survival instincts.

The scholar's commentary

God explicitly prohibits Isaac from going to Egypt and instead commands him to remain in the land, promising presence and blessing.

Language and setting

The divine intervention prevents what would be a repetition of Abraham's mistake—fleeing to Egypt (12:10-20) had resulted in compromise and deception. God's theophany (the 'appearing,' נִרְאָה, nirʾah) to Isaac establishes direct covenantal communication with the second generation. The prohibition against Egypt reflects Deuteronomic theology: Egypt represents reliance on human resources rather than divine provision, as later legislation explicitly warns against returning to Egypt (Deuteronomy 17:16).
