This test reveals something important about God's way: He often works through the small, consistent choices we make. The servant trusted that God would guide him toward a woman of character, and that character itself would be the sign.

The scholarly reading

The servant completes his test criteria: if the maiden offers water to his camels as well, she will be the woman God has chosen for Isaac.

Language and setting

The servant formulates this as a conditional expression of divine will—'the woman whom the LORD has appointed' (et-ha'ishah asher horaha YHWH). The language *horaha* (appointed, or more literally, 'designated') suggests divine predetermination working through human discernment. This represents what Procksch and later von Rad call 'election through character'—God's choice becomes manifest in observable virtue.
