The younger daughter also gives birth to a son she names Ben-ammi, who becomes the ancestor of the Ammonite nation.
Ben-ammi means 'son of my people'—another name that acknowledges the incestuous origin. The Ammonites, like the Moabites, will be a significant presence in Israel's history, sometimes opponents, sometimes neighbors.
The narrator
Genesis closes this dark chapter by looking forward. The consequences of what happened in that cave will ripple through the rest of the Bible. Moab and Ammon appear repeatedly in later narratives. This shows that God doesn't erase the consequences of our sin—He works through them, redemptively but realistically.

The name *Ben-'ammî* ('son of my people' or 'son of my kinsman') similarly carries potential irony: he is indeed the 'son' of his mother's kinsman (her father), yet the name obscures rather than declares this relationship. The genealogical conclusion—establishing the Ammonites as his descendants—parallels the Moabite origin, creating parallel etiologies for two neighboring nations.

These final verses establish that from Lot's degradation emerge two nations that will occupy significant space in Israel's subsequent history. The Ammonites, like the Moabites, will be both distant relatives and periodic antagonists. The narrative's conclusion suggests that even profound transgression does not escape God's providential ordering of history—these nations, however illegitimate their origins, become part of the world in which Israel must navigate.
