Abraham continues his negotiation, now asking what if only twenty righteous people are found in Sodom.
We're now at twenty. The numbers are getting smaller, and Abraham's tone remains respectful but determined. He's still prefacing with acknowledgment of his boldness, but he hasn't stopped. By this point, God's pattern of agreement has clearly given Abraham confidence to continue.

The repetition itself becomes part of the lesson. Abraham's persistent intercession for others mirrors what Jesus will later teach about persistent prayer. God rewards Abraham's concern with His willingness to listen.
Abraham again requests permission to speak and proposes that twenty righteous would warrant sparing the city.
By this point in the negotiation, the reader recognizes Abraham's rhetorical masterwork. Each reduction seems to approach a natural boundary—from fifty to forty-five to forty to thirty to twenty. Abraham is not simply making random proposals but moving through psychologically intelligible thresholds, each more plausible than the last. The repetition of 'Now that I have ventured' (הִנַּחַלְתִּי, hinnachalti) marks each new stage of the negotiation.

The pattern reinforces that intercession requires persistence and creative engagement with divine will—not passive acceptance but active negotiation within the bounds of covenantal relationship.
29Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?”
30Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?”
31And Abraham said, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?”
32Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?”
33When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned home.
