Abraham asks again: what if only forty righteous people are found there?
Abraham keeps going, dropping the number with each appeal. He's now ten people down from his original proposal. Notice God hasn't said no yet. This encourages Abraham to keep asking. There's a rhythm here—Abraham proposes, and God agrees each time, which emboldens him to ask again.

This shows the nature of effective prayer. Abraham isn't being greedy or presumptuous. He's passionately advocating for mercy, and God's willingness to listen invites him deeper into the conversation.
Abraham continues to negotiate, asking whether forty righteous would suffice to spare the city.
The pattern is now established: Abraham makes successive reductions, and God affirms each threshold. The rhetorical strategy is brilliant—each reduction seems more reasonable, gradually lowering expectations while maintaining the principle that righteousness has salvific power. The verb 'spoke' (דִּבֶּר, dibber) emphasizes the ongoing dialogue, not a one-time petition.

27Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord—though I am but dust and ashes—
28suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?”
29Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?”
30Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?”
31And Abraham said, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?”
