The Covenant of Circumcision

God makes the heart of the covenant explicit: Abram will become the father of many nations, not just one people.
This expands what Abram might have thought he understood. He's about to be the patriarch of multiple nations—an almost incomprehensible idea for a man with no children at all. God isn't just promising a son; He's promising Abram will be the ancestor of vast peoples spreading across the earth.
God continues His covenant speech to Abram
This promise reaches forward to the entire biblical narrative. From Abram's descendants come Israel, and through the line of Judah comes Jesus. But also, through Ishmael and other descendants, multiple nations emerge. God's covenant is bigger than one ethnic group.
God announces the fundamental promise: Abram will become the patriarch of multiple nations, not merely numerous individuals but distinct peoples with their own political existence.
The phrase 'father of many nations' (ab hamon goyim) moves beyond personal numerousness to geopolitical significance. The word goyim (nations/peoples) indicates tribal entities with territorial and cultural integrity. In the ancient Near Eastern context, this was an audacious claim—for a Mesopotamian migrant to become ancestral to multiple nations contradicted every visible reality.
God, elaborating the covenant terms to Abram
This promise encompasses both the physical descendants (Israel, Edom through Esau, the Ishmaelite peoples) and, in Christian theological interpretation stretching back to Paul and Augustine, the spiritual descendants—the community of faith transcending ethnic boundaries.
2I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.”
3Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
4“As for Me, this is My covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
5No longer will you be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
6I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.
