The Covenant of Circumcision
I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.” Genesis 17:2 · Berean Standard Bible
God promises to make a covenant with Abram and multiply his descendants so greatly that they'll be countless.
Abram has heard about blessing and descendants before, but this statement is different—it's deliberate and formal. God is stepping into a legal agreement, not just making casual remarks. The promise of extreme multiplication would have sounded almost absurd given Abram's age and Sarai's condition.
God continues speaking to Abram
This is the core promise that will echo through all of Scripture. Every nation that comes from Abram will trace back to this moment of covenant. It's not just about one son—it's about nations, kingdoms, and an endless line of descendants.
God commits to establishing a binding covenant and promises exponential multiplication—not merely many descendants, but a demographic transformation.
The term 'covenant' (berît in Hebrew) carries the weight of ancient Near Eastern suzerainty treaties; this is not casual promise but formal, legally-binding obligation. The promise of multiplication (hiphil form of rabah) suggests God will actively cause Abram's seed to proliferate beyond natural expectation—already a subtle acknowledgment of the biological difficulties ahead.
God speaking directly to Abram
This covenant establishment represents the progression from individual blessing (12:2-3) to covenantal structure—Israel's identity will subsequently be grounded in this Abrahamic covenant, which Paul later identifies as foundational to gentile inclusion (Romans 4; Galatians 3).
