Sowing and Reaping

You're responsible for carrying your own responsibilities—don't dump everything on others or expect the community to enable you to avoid your duties.
This seems to balance what Paul just said about bearing one another's burdens. Both things are true: you help people in crisis, and you don't coddle grown adults who refuse to handle their own lives. The Galatians needed both truths or they'd swing too far either direction.

The Bible is always realistic about human nature. Love doesn't mean enabling; maturity includes taking responsibility for yourself so you can actually help others.
Ultimately, each person bears personal responsibility for their own spiritual and moral weight—you cannot transfer this responsibility to others.
The apparent tension with verse 2 (carry *one another's* burdens) has puzzled interpreters since Chrysostom. The resolution: *phortion* (load/burden) here denotes the accountability each person bears before God for their choices, whereas *barē* (burden) in verse 2 denotes the external pressures and struggles we share communally. This distinction—between shared solidarity and individual accountability—reflects Hebrew ethical thought wherein community interdependence and personal responsibility are not opposed but complementary.
Paul, clarifying the limits of mutual burden-bearing
This articulates what medieval theology called *suum cuique*—to each their own accountability—while maintaining that Christian ethics transcends pure individualism. It anticipates Reformation thought on justification: Christ bears our ultimate burden at the cross, yet each person must respond to grace personally.

4Each one should test his own work. Then he will have reason to boast in himself alone, and not in someone else.

6Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word must share in all good things with his instructor.
