Language and setting

Paul attributes the false teaching not to God (ὁ καλέσας, ho kalesas, 'the One who called you')—used earlier in 1:6 and 5:13, emphasizing divine vocation—but implicitly to human deceit. The singular 'persuasion' (ἡ πεισμονή, hē peismonē, used only here in Paul) suggests a unified message, likely coordinated among Judaizers. Paul's rhetorical move here is theologically decisive: he frames the Judaizers' message as fundamentally inconsistent with God's character and calling. By contrast, God's call in 1:6 was into 'grace,' and in 1:15-16 was specifically to reveal Christ to gentiles. To insist on circumcision as salvifically necessary contradicts this revelatory history. Bengel noted that this verse dismisses false teaching by its source, not merely its content—a hermeneutical principle medieval theologians called 'theologically discerning authorities.'
