Some people hear about predestination and adoption and wonder if it makes human choice meaningless or if it's just for a spiritual elite. Paul cuts through that by reminding them: the whole point is to glorify God's grace. This isn't about spiritual elitism; it's about making God's character visible.

Language and setting

The Ephesians lived in a culture obsessed with honor and patronage. Paul reorients their understanding: The ultimate end of their salvation isn't their own benefit (though they benefit), but the glorification of God's grace. To whom does God's election and adoption ultimately point? Not the believers, but the Giver. This is theocentric soteriology—salvation that exalts God, not the saved.

Significance

This reflects the Reformed theological emphasis (developed later in thinkers like Calvin and Turretin) that God's glory is the chief end of all things, including salvation. But it's already here in Paul: salvation is theo-logical, not anthropocentric.
