This would have been stunning to hear for people who came from pagan backgrounds or who felt somehow excluded from God's people. The Ephesians needed to know they weren't an afterthought or a backup plan. They were chosen before the foundation of the world. That's not metaphorical comfort—that's the deepest possible security.

This echoes the Old Testament's repeated theme that God chose His people before anyone else chose Him—think of Abraham, Israel, David. But now that choosing extends to people in Ephesus who had no connection to that history. It's the fulfillment of God's intention to have a people for Himself across all nations and times.

God's choice of believers predates the world's creation, with the goal of making them holy and blameless—a moral and relational transformation accomplished through God's initiative and love.

Language and setting

The doctrine of election (Greek: ekloge, from which we derive 'elect') likely addresses anxieties among mixed communities. Gentiles especially might wonder: Are we really chosen? Paul insists the election is not recent or contingent—it's eternally anterior, written into God's purposes before time. Significance

This draws on Deuteronomic election theology (Deuteronomy 7:6-8, where Israel is chosen 'not because you were numerous'), the Servant passages in Isaiah (42:1; 49:3-6, where the Servant is chosen and made righteous), and Jewish pre-creation theology (cf. 1 Peter 1:20, speaking of Christ as 'foreknown before the foundation of the world').
