Language and setting

The phrase 'the first to hope in Christ' likely refers to Jewish believers who converted earliest, but the logic applies to all: we exist not for ourselves but for God's praise. The verb 'to be for the praise' (eis epainon) suggests a functional vocation—the church's raison d'être. Every prayer, act of obedience, and proclamation emanates from this purpose.
