Nebuchadnezzar is giving them a chance to deny the accusation or explain themselves. He's the supreme authority, and he's speaking to them personally now. The question is loaded—it presumes they've done something wrong. He's not asking whether they made a mistake; he's asking them to confirm or deny a deliberate act of defiance.

Where it sits in the story

This is a test of their willingness to stand by their convictions under pressure from someone who can destroy them. The king is giving them a moment to back down, but they won't take it.

The scholarly reading

Nebuchadnezzar directly asks the three youths whether they have indeed refused to serve his gods and worship his statue.

Language and setting

The king's question is formally structured, seeking confirmation of the accusation: 'Is it true...?' He is giving them an opportunity to deny, to recant, or to offer explanation. This reflects a pattern in the Daniel narratives where the king allows the accused to speak (as with the wise men in chapter 2, or Daniel's interpreters later). Yet the question itself contains an implicit threat: you are known to have done this; explain yourselves. The king has already been told the facts; he is inviting them to provide reason to spare them.

Significance

This interrogation mirrors the pattern throughout Scripture where the faithful are questioned about their allegiance—'Will you deny your God?' It tests not merely courage but the depth of faith.

12But there are some Jews you have appointed to manage the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—who have ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”

13Then Nebuchadnezzar, furious with rage, summoned Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king,

14and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden statue I have set up?

15Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the statue I have made, very good. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.
