The fourth and most prominent son of Abraham and Keturah, ancestor of the Midianite peoples. The Midianites became a significant nation in the ancient Near East, inhabiting the northwest Arabian Peninsula. Moses fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian and married Zipporah, daughter of the Midianite priest Jethro. Later the Midianites became enemies of Israel, defeated by Gideon. Through Midian, Abraham's influence extended far beyond the covenant line.

Now Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah, and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites. The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.
