A Jewish tax collector called by Jesus to leave his lucrative but despised profession and become a disciple. Tax collectors were hated as collaborators with Rome, making Jesus’ call to Matthew a radical act of grace. Matthew immediately threw a banquet and invited his fellow tax collectors to meet Jesus.
