A physician and careful historian who authored both the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts—together comprising more of the New Testament than any other author. Luke was Paul’s traveling companion and the only Gentile author of Scripture. His Gospel emphasizes Jesus’ compassion for the marginalized—women, the poor, Samaritans, and sinners—and includes beloved parables found nowhere else, such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. When others deserted Paul near the end, Luke alone remained with him.
