Moses’ faithful assistant who became Israel’s commander and led the conquest of the Promised Land. Joshua was one of only two spies (with Caleb) who believed God could give Israel victory over Canaan’s fortified cities. After Moses’ death, God told Joshua to ‘be strong and courageous,’ and he led Israel across the Jordan River, conquered Jericho with a shout, and distributed the land among the twelve tribes. His final challenge—‘choose this day whom you will serve’—remains one of Scripture’s most quoted calls to commitment.

Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent.

Moses is gone. The wilderness is over. Joshua stands at the edge of everything promised and hears: Be strong. Be courageous. I am with you.
Some time later, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
Joshua's final challenge echoes through centuries: choose today whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
